A little Nat Geo in a New York City courtyard

Yesterday, after the sun broke through the morning mist, I noticed a golden hawk eating fresh kill in the tree outside my window. For a moment, I thought one of my "frenemies" (i.e., the squirrels who control the courtyard) had been snagged for lunch. Upon closer inspection, I saw of two of them hiding very quietly: frozen until the hawk flew away.
(Turns out the hawk's prey was a pigeon.)                                            --Tom Eubanks
